NEWCASTLE THUNDER KICK OFF RLWC TROPHY TOUR
Denis Betts and Jack Johnson help mark 200 days to go until the big kick off.
Newcastle Thunder director of rugby Denis Betts and wing Jack Johnson headed to the Newcastle Quayside on Tuesday morning, as the Rugby League World Cup marked 200 days to the start of the tournament.
The Thunder duo were joined by tournament ambassador Jason Robinson and the trophies for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments as a 48-hour tour of the silverware across the 18 host towns and cities.
With the city hosting the opening game of the men’s tournament at St James’ Park as well as three fixtures at Kingston Park, the guests were challenged to kick a Sully Ball into the River Tyne during an early morning photo call.
After kicking off the tour the three trophies then headed to Teesside for the next stop of their journey, with the Riverside stadium also set to host a men’s game fixture in the autumn.
The Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021) makes a real impact across the nation when England take on Samoa in the tournaments’ opening fixture at St James’ Park, Newcastle on 15th October 2022.
