Clarke commits for two more years

2nd November 2017

The strong local voice of Rhys Clarke will continue to ring out in the Thunder squad for the rest of the decade after the second row agrees on a new two year deal at Kingston Park Stadium.

The 26-year-old is a club stalwart having notched up 109 appearances for the club to date, over two stints on Tyneside in a career that started back in 2009.

Adding in his appearances for York City Knights and Whitehaven, Clarke has played in 175 matches and brings a wealth of knowledge as one of the most experienced players at the club.

Co-Captain alongside Joe Brown for the past two seasons, his experience has been brought to bear for Thunder to great effect as Clarke has made himself into a regular feature in the Thunder squad.

Part of a core of local talent at Jason Payne’s disposal, Clarke declares himself ready and eager for the forthcoming season.

He said: “I’m really happy to re-sign for another two years. The club is progressing well and there is a really exciting squad being put together next year with some real quality guys coming in along with those who are already here.

“We’re looking to go better than last season and the semi-finals and it is going to be interesting to see what Payney and Heapy can do with a full pre-season.

“They had us getting towards their style of play by the end of this year and that can be stamped on from the start in 2018.”

Head coach Jason Payne said: “Rhys has been a great servant to the club and I am delighted he has agreed a new two year deal. I believe over the next couple of years Rhys will be hitting his prime and that is a really exciting prospect.

“He has developed into a real leader within our team in the past few seasons and I am sure this will continue to be the case. He is a local lad and playing for the club means everything to him and whenever we have people like that in the squad, we will be happy.”
