Newcastle Thunder will compete in a 14 team competition in 2018, following confirmation from the RFL about the future structure of Kingston Press League 1.

Following two seasons as a 16 team competition which included a mid-season split after 15 games where clubs played each other either home or away, next year will see a return to a traditional home and away schedule.

With the Toronto Wolfpack and Barrow Raiders promoted to the Kingstone Press Championship, their places have been taken by Bradford Bulls and Oldham Roughyeds, who drop down into the third tier.

2018’s competing clubs see League 1 retain its status as the most geographically diverse rugby league competition, with Cumbria, Yorkshire, Lancashire, the Midlands, the South and Wales all represented along with the North East.

Absent from the roster of teams for 2018 are Oxford RLFC and University of Gloucestershire All Golds, who will sit out the season as they work on a project to establish themselves as a new look club based out of the city of Bristol in 2019.

With the format of the competition now confirmed, work has now begun on preparing the 2018 season fixture list, with dates expected to be confirmed in November.

Thunder will eagerly await the confirmation of these details, with the prospect of a home game once again kicking off a big three days of rugby league in the region when the Dacia Magic Weekend returns to St James’ Park.

With an exciting squad already taking shape with both key re-signings and new additions, 2018 is shaping up to be another thrilling year, one for which season ticket details will be announced soon.
