Newcastle will welcome the stars of Super League for a fourth consecutive year in 2018, after the city was confirmed as the host for the Dacia Magic Weekend over the weekend of Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20.

The well-established extravaganza, which sees a full round of Super League fixtures played over the course of a weekend, has been resident in the city since 2015 and has been warmly received by fans of the competing clubs and the wider North East community.

Since making the move to Newcastle United’s St James’ Park, the three Dacia Magic Weekends hosted in the city have seen the three highest attendances in the event’s history and have contributed greatly to growing attendances at Newcastle Thunder.

Having played a Kingstone Press League 1 fixture on the Friday prior to Super League’s big weekend, Thunder have been able to attract substantial four figure crowds to games against York City Knights and introduce the club to a much wider audience.

And with details of the structure of League 1 due to be confirmed in the near future, the North East’s only professional rugby league club are confident of continuing to work that magic in 2018.

Newcastle Thunder chairman Mick Hogan said: “We’re delighted that the Dacia Magic Weekend will be back in Newcastle. It shows real commitment by Super League and the RFL to support the growth of the game in the North East.“As well as attracting its three biggest crowds whilst in the city, the event has also aided with the development of Thunder and the wider game.

“We’ve welcomed over 2,000 fans to Kingston Park Stadium for Thunder games on the Friday before in each of the last three years and the club’s community project have been able to offer some great opportunities to the kids they engage with too.

“We’re sure that the 2018 edition will offer a host of exciting opportunities to grow the game in the North East and we’re looking forward to being a part of that again.”

Announcing the decision to return to St James’ Park, Super League General Manager, Mark Foster, said: “We are delighted to be bringing the Dacia Magic Weekend back to Newcastle for a fourth year. We had a number of other cities bid to host what is a fantastic event but Newcastle is a great venue for us – the city has made us feel incredibly welcome over the last three years and we know our fans love to come to Newcastle for the weekend.”
